Paolo Bea 'Pipparello' 2019 Rosso Riserva Montefalco, Umbria
750ml bottle
14.5% abv
Dense, brooding aromatics of dark cherries, dried herbs, forest floor, and warm spice. The palate is powerful yet silky, with juicy red/black fruit, savory earth, wild herbs, and a subtle citrus snap. Gritty tannins and lively acidity give it serious structure. Long, layered, and energetic with Bea’s signature rustic elegance. Needs air now; built to age.
FARMING: Organic
VARIETY: 60% Sangiovese, 25% Montepulciano, 15% Sagrantino
TERROIR: The Pipparello cru sits at 400 meters altitude on gravel and clay soils in Montefalco, Umbria. The 2019 vintage brought a warm, dry summer balanced by diurnal temperature shifts, producing intense, powerful, structured wines built for the cellar.
VINIFICATION: 26-day maceration on skins with native yeasts. 14.5% alcohol. No temperature control, no pumping, no fining, no filtering.
AGING: Nearly 4 years in cask.
Long-macerated, organically farmed blend of Sangiovese, Montepulciano, and Sagrantino from a high-altitude clay-gravel vineyard. Fermented with native yeasts, aged about one year in steel and two years in large Slavonian botti, and bottled unfined/unfiltered with low sulfur.
The 2019 “Pipparello”, a 96-point Super Umbrian Rosso, expertly blended. This standout rivals Tuscany’s elite, from Sassicaia to Ornellaia, with an aging potential that goes the distance.
For over four decades, Azienda Agricola Paolo Bea has been making some of Italy's most uncompromising, singular wines. The Bea family has been documented in Montefalco since 1500, crafting boisterous, wild expressions of Umbria's sun-drenched hills. As a co-founder of the ViniVeri ("Real Wine") movement, Giampiero refuses shortcuts: no green harvesting, no sorting, no temperature regulation, no pumping, no fining, no filtering. Just patience and trust in time over technology.
96 Points, Vinous Media:
“Youthfully intense, the 2019 Montefalco Rosso Riserva Pipparello smolders up with a hauntingly dark bouquet of grilled herbs, cloves, flowery undergrowth and dried black cherries. This mixes silken textures with a wonderfully graceful feel, showing vividly pure red berry fruits and a cascade of spices, all offset by a tinge of sour citrus. This puckers the cheeks with concentration and a coating of fine-grained tannins, finishing structured yet with immaculate balance and poise. Rosy inner florals and sour cherry resonate... Bury the 2019 deep in the cellar.”
