Flat to gently undulating terrain at approximately 117 metres above sea level. Deep tschernosem (black earth) topsoil over gravelly subsoil, with high humus content. The site receives more sunshine than any other wine region in Austria and benefits from the moderating influence of Lake Neusiedl, which tempers heat and prevents frost. Vines reflect a mild, distinctly salty terroir character noted across vintages.

Hand-harvested in late September to early October. Destemmed and crushed, spontaneous fermentation in stainless steel with three weeks on skins. Aged in stainless steel to preserve primary fruit character. Bottled unfiltered. No enzymes, minimal sulfur.

The Hedwighof is the only site-denominated wine among Moser's Apetlon reds, and the Zweigelt from this parcel has been the foundation of the estate's red wine program since Nikolaus Moser's grandfather first recognized the site's potential. The Moser family has farmed in Apetlon since 1960, and the Hedwighof's oldest Zweigelt vines date to that decade. For the context and history of the Vitikultur Moser estate more broadly, see the Von den Terrassen Riesling entry.

Zweigelt (a 1922 crossing of Blaufränkisch and St. Laurent, bred by Friedrich Zweigelt at Klosterneuburg) is Austria's most widely planted red variety, accounting for roughly 15% of total vineyard area. At its best, on old vines with warm, mineral-rich soils, it produces wines of genuine depth and a distinctive silky texture. The Hedwighof, with its black earth and gravel over decades-old root systems, is among the more compelling addresses for the variety in the country.

The Vitikultur Moser estate traces its origins to Lenz Moser, one of the most influential figures in 20th-century Austrian viticulture, credited with developing the high-culture training system that transformed Austrian vine management. His son Sepp Moser began operating the estate under his own name in 1987, and in 2000 handed direction to Sepp's son Nikolaus (Niki) Moser, who renamed it Vitikultur Moser. Niki converted the estate to biodynamic viticulture in 2006, among the first in Austria to do so, and achieved Demeter certification shortly after. The estate now farms approximately 51 hectares across two geographically distinct regions: white wines from Rohrendorf in the Kremstal, and reds from Apetlon on the Neusiedlersee.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0754/3206/7378/files/2_db6a1bbb-ac51-4835-938e-dd70ed3c7a7f.webp?v=1777752626
