Bien dans Sa Peau (comfortable in its own skin) is a red and white field blend who's name signals the wine's intent: an easygoing, unfussy expression made from whatever the estate's granite, sandstone, and clay parcels offer in a given vintage. The blend varies and varietal proportion is not disclosed.
Domaine Charles Frey has farmed in Dambach-la-Ville since 1709, with the first estate-bottled wines appearing in 1963. Dominique Frey converted the estate to organic and biodynamic farming in 1997, certified by both AB (Agriculture Biologique) and Ecocert. The third generation, Julien and Thiébaud Frey, now runs the domaine, farming 14 hectares on the granite slopes surrounding Dambach-la-Ville, including parcels within the Grand Cru Frankstein.
All cellar work is done in the estate's aboveground bio-climatic winery, built in 2010. At Charles Frey, winemaking is rooted in biodynamics and a respect for nature’s rhythms. Their unique bioclimatic winery is above ground, and made entirely of solid wood, without air conditioning and only with natural materials. In the cellar, the team keeps things simple and natural, favouring spontaneous fermentation, minimal intervention, and no unnecessary additions.
