Domaine Boehler 'Hahnenberg' 2022 Riesling Grand Vin de Molsheim Alsace
750ml bottle
13.5% abv
Dry, crystalline, finely chiseled, and marked by the iodine-tinged salinity that these calcareous soils consistently produce.
Julien Boehler is the sixth generation of his family to farm in Molsheim, 15 kilometres from Strasbourg, where his ancestors began estate bottling in the early 1970s. After completing a Master's in vine, wine, and terroir in Dijon and working internationally, Julien returned in 2016 to take full control of winemaking and now leads the estate's organic conversion. He is also president of the Association des Jeunes Vignerons d'Alsace, which led the first official mapping of Alsace's lieux-dits in 2020.
Hahnenberg is one of those newly mapped sites, a steep, east-facing lieu-dit on the outskirts of Molsheim with rendzine limestone soils so thin and poor that yields rarely exceed 17 hl/ha. Once farmed by Carthusian monks and historically shipped to the great tables of Europe, the parcel was acquired by Julien's father René. The 2022 Riesling is fermented with indigenous yeasts, and aged on full lees in stainless steel without fining or filtration.
