Rich yet fresh and lifted. Dense black cherry and fig, with mint and black tea. Medium tannins and a long finish.
100% organic Teroldego from about nine hectares in a largely contiguous block on the hills of Sorni di Lavis (Pressano), just outside Trento, between roughly 200 and 500 meters elevation. Soils sit on a vein of gypsum, part of the earliest sedimentary layer beneath the Dolomites, left behind as the sea receded.
Hand-harvested across multiple passes. Fermentation is started with a pied de cuve, a portion of the crop set aside in demijohns before harvest and left to ferment spontaneously in the vineyard; this starter inoculates the full lots. Destemmed and fermented in stainless steel for 10 to 15 days, then aged in steel, and rested at least a year in bottle before release. Wine is moved by gravity during racking. Limited filtration, no fining. A moderate dose of sulfur is added to preserve the wine.
Eredi di Cobelli Aldo has farmed in Sorni di Lavis, in the hills above Trento, since the mid-1800s, when Giuseppe Cobelli arrived as a mezzadro, a sharecropping farmhand, before the family acquired what is now Maso Panizza di Sopra, a fifteenth-century farmhouse that remains the core of the estate. Grandfather Adriano planted most of the vineyards; father Aldo made wine for family and friends while the family also raised pigs, rabbits, chickens, and cows through the 1980s. Aldo died in 2005, four years after his brother and business partner Valeriano. His three sons, Tiziano (an oenologist), Devis (an agronomist), and Ivano (also trained in oenology), formalized the family vineyards into a dedicated winery, founding Eredi di Cobelli Aldo in 2008 in their father's honor. The estate now produces about nine labels and roughly 40,000 bottles a year.
