Our basalt wines are sourced from organically farmed vineyards that reside exclusively in rich volcanic basalt soils. The goal with this wine is to showcase a holistic and pure representation of the vintage characteristics from our cellar.
The 2023 growing season in Oregon began with one of the c oldest and wettest Aprils on record, followed by an extraordinary heatwave in May, which brought 19 days of record-high temperatures. This abrupt shift shortened our typical 8-10 week spring growing period to just 5.5 weeks. A notably warm August, with twice the usual number of 90+ degree days, further condensed the harvest window. As a result, the majority of our picking occurred in a remarkable 12-day sprint from September 12th to 23rd, capturing 80% of the year’s production. Despite these challenges, the fruit quality was exceptional. Fermentation times varied by site, ranging from 10 to 30 days, allowing each lot to evolve naturally and express its unique character.
Granville Wine Co. is led by second-generation wine growers Ayla and Jackson Holstein. Their estate vineyard and winery are located in the Dundee Hills of Oregon’s Willamette Valley.
