Niepoort’s Bairrada Pinot Noir is a rare expression of Pinot in Portugal, grown on limestone soils at Quinta de Baixo in a region better known for Baga and sparkling wine. Dirk made it as an exploration of elegance and site transparency, aiming for freshness, restraint, and food-friendliness rather than power. It’s compelling because it delivers Burgundian sensibility from an unexpected place, in very limited quantities.

The wine presents a bright, clear, cherry red color. The nose is both delicate and complex. Initially, floral and red berry aromas are prominent, followed by earthy notes and hints of dried herbs, spices, and nuts. On the palate, the attack is juicy with chalky tannins and lively acidity that give the wine a beautiful linearity. An absolute rarity from Bairrada.
All grapes are harvested by hand. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks, followed by 14 months of aging in barrels. Production limited to just 660 bottles.
Dirk Niepoort's deep fascination with the Bairrada terroir and its native Baga grape led him to seek out small plots with old vines and to purchase Quinta de Baixo in 2012. His aim was to create a classic wine that reflects the unique character of Bairrada Baga in the bottle. The 'Montarro' vineyard, planted with Pinot Noir 30 years ago, was also part of this estate. This Burgundy grape thrives in the clay and limestone soils and produces wines characterized by their complexity and elegance.
Niepoort is one of the great Port houses and is now in its sixth generation of tradition and innovation. Fifth-generation owner Dirk Niepoort has paved the way for the production of dry wine in Port, and has been instrumental in elevating its status. Always interested in pushing the boundaries of what the Port wine industry looks like, Dirk, now joined by his son, Daniel, has acquired access to fruit throughout Portugal.
Sustainable and organic work in the vineyard and cellar is always prioritized.
