Old World Winery 'Abundance - A.J. Duckhorn Vineyard' 2021 Red Wine Russian River Valley
750ml bottle
12.3% abv
A light, food-friendly yet quaffable red blend. The fruit is present and well developed but secondary, letting bitter herbs and savoury minerality lead, begging another sip. Absolutely delicious.
Field blend of Muscadelle, Palomino (Golden Chasselas), Zinfandel, Abouriou, Mondeuse Noire, and Trousseau Gris. All varieties co-planted, and co-harvested on a single day, generally late August.
AJ Duckhorn Vineyard, Martinelli Road, Russian River Valley. Less than one acre of loam-covered shale and rocky substrate, east-facing with a slight decline toward the creek. Planted 1890 by Giuseppe Duckhorn, who took one of each variety available from the local seed bank and planted them randomly at 8-foot spacing, head-trained. Organic and biodynamic farming, dry-farmed.
Hand-harvested, 100% whole cluster, foot-trod, co-fermented with 7-day maceration on skins and stems. Spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts. Minimal sulfur. Unfined, unfiltered. No chemical inputs.
The AJ Duckhorn Vineyard was planted in 1890 by Giuseppe Duckhorn and later managed by Martinelli Winery, who sold Abouriou fruit to E&J Gallo and used the Zinfandel for their own wines. Darek Trowbridge is the sole steward and only winemaker to produce wine from these vines.
Old World Winery is a small, family owned winery and farm. Organic, Biodynamic, Dry Farmed, Hand Picked, Foot Stomped, and All Natural – true to its name.
For 20 years proprietor and fourth generation winemaker Darek Trowbridge has chosen to use the traditional practices learned from his Grandfather Lino Martinelli, to produce chemical free, delicious wines. Darek’s passion is inviting nature into his winemaking using 120 year old field blends, rare varietals and only the native yeasts found on the grapes themselves for fermentation. Winemaking and farming can be a sacred ritual. It’s about purity and transparency in fruit and form. That is Old World Winery’s guiding principle.
