Springbank 'Longrow - Batch #2' Cask Strength Peated Single Malt Scotch Whisky
Springbank 'Longrow - Batch #2' Cask Strength Peated Single Malt Scotch Whisky
700ml bottle
57% abv
Nose of redcurrants, Madagascan vanilla, salami, and peppercorns, with an ashy note present from the start. On the palate, peat smoke builds alongside tobacco, cigar smoke, dark fruits, and leather, with chili pepper spice, cherry menthol, and persistent peat smoke throughout. – Springbank Distillery, producer notes, Batch 2
100% heavily peated malted barley. Peat dried at Springbank's own floor maltings.
Double distilled in the traditional Scottish manner, in contrast to Springbank's triple distillation. Matured approximately 4 years in refill bourbon casks, then over 2 years in refill Pinot Noir casks. Bottled at cask strength, 57% ABV (114 proof). Non-chill filtered. No added color.
The Peated Cask Strength is an annual limited release introduced as a companion to the standard Longrow Peated bottling, distinguishing itself through the Pinot Noir cask finish in place of the sherry casks used elsewhere in the Longrow range. The red wine cask contributes redcurrant and dark fruit notes that cut through the heavy peat character, producing a profile distinct from Islay-style peated Scotch. Batch 2 is the second release in the series.
Longrow takes its name from a distillery that operated beside Springbank in Campbeltown in the 19th century before closing in 1896. The name was revived by Springbank in 1973 as their heavily peated expression, produced intermittently at first and then more regularly as demand for peated Scotch outside Islay grew. Springbank Distillery in Campbeltown is one of the few Scottish distilleries to malt, distill, mature, and bottle entirely on site. The Mitchell family has owned the distillery continuously since 1828, making it one of the oldest independent family-owned distilleries in Scotland. Campbeltown, once home to over 30 distilleries in the 19th century, now has three: Springbank (which produces Springbank, Longrow, and Hazelburn), Glen Scotia, and Glengyle.
