Tomac "Rockstar" 2021 Riesling Plešivica, Croatia

Rockstar is 100% barrel fermented Riesling, 10% whole cluster, and no crushing for 7 days. Afterward the wine undergoes spontaneous fermentation and is allowed to ferment naturally - 90% in 200L Slavonian oak barrels. This wine in 2021 fermented for an entire year(!) and started malolactic fermentation at the beginning of 2022. The wine is aged for 12 months and then bottled with minimal sulfur additions.

For Tomislav and Martina Tomac, there is nothing more important in winemaking then the soil (rocks) and the cosmic movements of nature (stars) which inspired the name of this wine. The key for Rockstar is to produce a Riesling that speaks of Pleševica terroir. They have a region that achieves the natural perfect balance of ripeness along with high acidity. They are not trying to be Rheingau, Wachau, or Alsace, but to show that the pure and true expressions of this region command uniquely superb wines of authenticity.

The Tomac family has been making wine for over 100 years, and has a total of 9ha of vineyards, including the varietals Rhine Riesling, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, and old Plešivica varieties. Many vineyards are very old, up to 80 years, and all Tomac wines are produced exclusively from grapes from the family's own vineyards.
